âWhere to now, Megan?â
âBenâs cabin.â
Ronnie is on her phone, searching motor vehicle records. âI canât believe I didnât find the other truck in his vehicle registration.â
That makes two of us. âItâs okay. We know now.â
When Luci spoke coherently, she told us we had missed Benâs visit by less than an hour. According to Luci, he had come in a Chevy truck but he has access to two other trucks, another Chevy and a Ford kept in a garage within walking distance of his cabin. We hadnât searched the woods.
Ben bought the condo for her to stay in but they met at his cabin. Before that it was hotels. She thought he lived in the cabin. During todayâs brief visit heâd warned her when we talked to her we would try to turn her against him. He said he loved her and wanted to be with her. He admitted he hadnât filed for the divorce but that was because he couldnât find Marlena. He didnât know his wife was missing until the police contacted him. It was one of many other lies.
He told Luci to ask for an attorney when we came, because we would suspect her of his wifeâs disappearance. Ben came right out and said as his lover she had as much motive as he did to get rid of Marlena. He didnât mention Bennie. He promised to get her out of Washington State and take her anywhere she wanted to go if she didnât talk to us. He also said he would buy a house for them to live in together. She wasnât fooled and knew it was over between them. She would never live with a liar and a cheater. Iâd asked if she had anyone that could stay with her. Hopefully to hide the liquor before she killed herself. There was no one. Sheâd never spoken to any of the neighbors and I could understand why.
I tell Ronnie, âBefore we left, she asked if Ben was in trouble. I think sheâll deny everything she told us. Sheâs still in love with him.â
Ronnie nods. âThere are hundreds of vehicles registered to Parker Industries. I located his phone and itâs still at the cabin. Maybe he has a couple of phones and switches them out.â
Weâre too late. Heâs rabbited. He could be getting on his private jet right now. But Marlena and Bennie are still out there somewhere, and Ben is the only one who knows where. My instinct is telling me they were being held at the timber mill and when he didnât show up on time for his interview he wasnât sleeping. He was keeping them unconscious on sleeping meds and moving them. I canât imagine doing that to a four-year-old boy you profess to love. Heâs a psycho. A very rich psycho. He could hire someone to spirit them away. They could be anywhere by now. But I donât think Ben will want to give up control of them. Heâll want them close. They belong to him.
